Reformatting my MacBook Pro

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

My MacBook Pro has been acting up since the hard drive upgrade. So coming from such a strong Windows background, the natural answer is to reformat the MacBook Pro.

I’m backing up my personal data right now, I think it will take another hour or so.

(About five days later…)

I was a little busy and postponed the reformat until this past weekend. Everything is running great! Since I decided not to restore from a backup, I needed to reinstall some applications that I use daily.  So here are some apps that I think are must haves (that Apple has not provided):

  • Adium – I prefer Adium over iChat because it integrates all my Instant Messenger accounts, although the video chat on iChat rocks!
  • AppCleaner – This is a great tool to have, it’s even better if you never have to use it.
  • Firefox – I love Safari and use it often, but the allure of the Awesome Bar!
  • Flip4Mac – For the occasional .wmv file I come across.
  • Growl – A fantastic notification tool.
  • Perian – Video codecs for the Mac, must have.
  • Quicksilver – Spotlight is awesome, but you can apply actions to Quicksilver!  Not only can you launch iTunes, but with the right plugins enabled–you can even start playing music!
  • Skype – Essential to video chat with my sister or my friends in other states / countries.
  • Twitterrific – I love to tweet, I love to receive tweets, but I hate refreshing my browser all the time.
  • VMware Fusion – If you have any need to virtualize at all on the Mac, get Fusion.  My Windows and Linux VMs come in super handy.

Let me know if you have any must haves that I should check out!

A fresh start for my old laptop

Friday, September 12th, 2008

My work laptop has been acting up lately, the latest was having issues connecting to the wireless network at work (works fine everywhere else!)  Rather than tackling each problem individually, I decided that it was a great opportunity to start fresh.  (You will notice I do not have any office suites, or anti-virus programs listed here as I use the company provided software.)  Here are some of my must haves:

  • 7-zip - A great, lightweight replacement for unarchiving just about anything.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader - I enjoy using Foxit Reader, it’s quick and fast–however almost every PDF that I review has a digital signature attached to it, or embedded files, and Acrobat Reader does a better job supporting these features.
  • Google Chrome - Google’s first web browser.  I’ve only been using it for a little over a week, but I’ve been impressed with it so far.  The omnibar isn’t as awesome as the awesome bar.  Chrome is a memory hog though, but at least when you close a tab it releases the memory unlike some other browsers on this list.
  • InfraRecorder - I don’t burn a lot of CDs–I heard about this program on Lifehacker and decided to give it a try.  I’ve used this program once since downloading it.  It seems to be a pretty solid open source burning application.
  • iTunes - Who doesn’t like iTunes?  Probably a lot of people, but it’s never given me any problems–plus it has a stellar interface.
  • Launchy - Launchy is an application launcher, and possibly my favorite productivity application for Windows.  I no longer am a slave to the Start menu!
  • Mozilla Firefox - There are tons of praises and complaints about Mozilla’s Firefox, but I will say this: the awesome bar has changed my web browsing experience.
  • Notepad++ - Notepad++ is an amazing text editor, and a great replacement for notepad.
  • PDFCreator - This is a fantastic tool, especially when you’re on the go without a printer!
  • Pidgin - A great open-source IM client.
  • PuTTY - Although I am a big fan of PuTTY–I actually am using SecureCRT as I do occasionally need to console into some equipment. [Edit 2008-09-17: I was surfing around and just found out PuTTY added serial support.  Awesome news!  Sadly, I did not find out that it's been supported since January 2007 until today.]
  • VLC - All around media player, it even does DVDs!  It’s not as slick as some of the other programs, but this will play just about anything!
  • Windows Desktop Search - I think desktop search is a MUST have for everyone!!!  If you’re fortunate enough to be running Mac OS then you’re probably enjoying the benefits of Spotlight.  I’ve used Google Desktop Search in the past and I do enjoy it–however I do not want my desktop search program to launch Firefox everytime for results!
