Dear Video-on-demand,

Dear Video-on-demand,

I love you.  This summer you allowed me to catch up on Season 3 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (via www.hulu.com) and I’ve been using you to watch True Blood (via Charter Video-on-demand).  Recently I watched the first episode of Chuck Season 2 (via www.amazon.com and Charter Video-on-demand) before the episode airs.

You allow me to watch TV on my own schedule without a DVR.  You rock!

Love,

Jonathan

Digging Drop.io

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

I found out about drop.io a couple months ago from a co-worker, and I must say it’s a pretty sweet service.  The service allows you to share up to 100MB files at no charge, with the option of purchasing their premium service.  Unlike other services such as Dropbox, Drop.io does not require that you register at all.  If you need to share some documents very quickly, this is the way to do it.

I would however recommend encrypting your files!

Confessions of a TV junkie

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

I love TV, I truly do.  From my guilty pleasures to those wonderful rare gems that have carved out a special place in my heart, I love it all.  For me, the fall TV lineup is full of excitement: answers to last season’s cliffhangers, old favorites returning, new shows trying to make their mark before the midseason replacements come looking for a time slot.

This is an exciting time, however it can be pretty frustrating as well.  In years past I have been in absolute heartache over the cancellation of some of my favorite shows.  I always get a little nervous when I get attached to a show on FOX, they probably have the worst track record of killing amazing shows such as Undeclared, Firefly, and Wonderfalls.  Now it troubles me that I’ll be tuning into FOX for more than one new show.

A short list of returning shows in my Fall lineup:

  • How I Met Your Mother – Seriously one of the funniest shows on TV.  NPH is legend…wait-for-it-…dary!  If you haven’t seen this one, go watch the first season and you’ll know what I mean.
  • Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – I love the concept for this show, and for me, it makes up for T3.  I worry because it’s on FOX, but it has made it through it’s first, but very short, season.  (Can I just say, Summer Glau is fucking hot.)
  • Chuck – The premise of this show is a little out there, a government super computer gets downloaded into the brain of a geek nerd named Chuck.  It’s a pretty amazing show, especially if you like aspiring actresses that were former models.
  • Pushing Daisies – Perhaps my favorite current TV show.  It’s a little hard to explain in a sentence or two…it’s wonderfully whimsical and it’s probably not for everyone.
  • It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia - Thanks John for catching this one.  Damn TV Guide link doesn’t list cable networks.

Some new shows I’m excited about:

  • True Blood – Vampires in modern day America fighting for equal rights?!  I’ve only seen two episodes, but so far–I dig it!
  • Fringe – I actually know little about this show, but some friends mentioned it was good, so I shall check it out.
  • Dollhouse – I know nothing about this show, except it’s from Joss Whedon.  I’m not hoping for Firefly, but if half as good–I’ll be tuning in weekly–that is if FOX doesn’t cancel it before.

TV Guide’s Fall TV schedule – This link does not include cable network shows.

One lightbulb, two lightbulbs, what more?

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

Earlier this week my passenger side headlamp burned out.  I went to the auto parts store to purchase a replacement.  I thought about it for a second, I could have purchased the two pack for $8 more–but since only one light was out, what was the point?  At home, I replaced the lightbulb, turned on my headlamps to test it all out–and the other one burned out.  So I got in the car, headed to the auto parts store to purchase another bulb.

In short, replaced both bulbs and now I can safely drive at night.

A fresh start for my old laptop

Friday, September 12th, 2008

My work laptop has been acting up lately, the latest was having issues connecting to the wireless network at work (works fine everywhere else!)  Rather than tackling each problem individually, I decided that it was a great opportunity to start fresh.  (You will notice I do not have any office suites, or anti-virus programs listed here as I use the company provided software.)  Here are some of my must haves:

  • 7-zip - A great, lightweight replacement for unarchiving just about anything.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader - I enjoy using Foxit Reader, it’s quick and fast–however almost every PDF that I review has a digital signature attached to it, or embedded files, and Acrobat Reader does a better job supporting these features.
  • Google Chrome - Google’s first web browser.  I’ve only been using it for a little over a week, but I’ve been impressed with it so far.  The omnibar isn’t as awesome as the awesome bar.  Chrome is a memory hog though, but at least when you close a tab it releases the memory unlike some other browsers on this list.
  • InfraRecorder - I don’t burn a lot of CDs–I heard about this program on Lifehacker and decided to give it a try.  I’ve used this program once since downloading it.  It seems to be a pretty solid open source burning application.
  • iTunes - Who doesn’t like iTunes?  Probably a lot of people, but it’s never given me any problems–plus it has a stellar interface.
  • Launchy - Launchy is an application launcher, and possibly my favorite productivity application for Windows.  I no longer am a slave to the Start menu!
  • Mozilla Firefox - There are tons of praises and complaints about Mozilla’s Firefox, but I will say this: the awesome bar has changed my web browsing experience.
  • Notepad++ - Notepad++ is an amazing text editor, and a great replacement for notepad.
  • PDFCreator - This is a fantastic tool, especially when you’re on the go without a printer!
  • Pidgin - A great open-source IM client.
  • PuTTY - Although I am a big fan of PuTTY–I actually am using SecureCRT as I do occasionally need to console into some equipment. [Edit 2008-09-17: I was surfing around and just found out PuTTY added serial support.  Awesome news!  Sadly, I did not find out that it's been supported since January 2007 until today.]
  • VLC - All around media player, it even does DVDs!  It’s not as slick as some of the other programs, but this will play just about anything!
  • Windows Desktop Search - I think desktop search is a MUST have for everyone!!!  If you’re fortunate enough to be running Mac OS then you’re probably enjoying the benefits of Spotlight.  I’ve used Google Desktop Search in the past and I do enjoy it–however I do not want my desktop search program to launch Firefox everytime for results!

A brave new world

Hello, my name is Jonathan and this is my first post.

I originally planned to have a nearly completed site–something a little rough, something I could improve upon–before my first post.  It’s the idea I had nearly two years ago when I registered this domain, and the same idea I had a year ago when I finally decided to host the site somewhere.  My point is, I could have waited another two years before I found the time for this project.  As motivational-speaker-trying-to-pedal-his-overpriced-self-help-tapes sounding as I may seem: I realized that if you want to do something–MAKE the time to do it.

I want to take a moment to write about my hopes for this blog.  I hope that this will be something I continue long after this post.  I hope that by writing down my thoughts and experiences, it will help me to clarify, understand, and hopefully broaden my view on life.  I mostly hope that my future posts won’t be written in a voice that seems too distant and detached.
